I can definitely see why Youtube has become so successful, it is so addicting! It's a great site to visit when you're bored or looking for some easy, accessible entertainment. So many people access the viedoes on Youtube and upload videos of their own. The video we watched in class the other day already had so many views.

I think that it's great we did the video assignment with iMovie. Everyone had great videos and I think anyone from our class could win the contest for hunger bytes.

The only concern I have with Youtube is that it's so easy to upload vidoes that anyone can do it. And I mean anyone. While I was searching for a music video, the content list included young girls dancing around. They should be careful because predators could see their videos. I think there should be stricter rules for uploading videos for protection purposes.

I created my movie as a slide show with a compilation of pictures and facts. My pictures are of young children and babies. The first set of pictures shows sad, hungry kids, and the second set of pictures is happy kids who have food. I think it's cute, and I hope you do as well.

A new website was launched that is an Arabic website about Jews and Judaism. The website was launched by the American Jewish Committee, and is completely in Arabic. You can see the website at http://www.aslayahud.org

This is a great way for the Arabic community to stay in touch and have a virtual history of their culture and practices. People can go on the site and ask questions, so it is very interactive. I think this is a great way to keep the Arabic language alive because the site is completely in Arabic, and the questions are also answered in Arabic. It is a way for people to comfortably use their language.

#19 Companies can now communicate with their markets directly. If they blow it, it could be their last chance.

--With the use of blogging and Web 2.0, companies can directly communicate with their markets. Web 2.0 has allowed communication online to be two-way. As far as blowing it, well we can look at the Wal-Mart example. Wal-Mart created a blog of a fake family vacationing and camping in their parking lots. The entire blog was a scam created by Wal-Mart's PR company. They received a lot of flack and really discredited their reputation. A great example of positive communication between companies and markets is Apple. The CEO blogs regularly and uses a conversational tone. When the company needed to own up to some mistakes they made in the past, the CEO used blogging and direct communication to apologize.

--Every consumer can relate to this statement. We want our needs met to appropriate standards. Dell does a great job of paying attention to their publics. Their website allows consumers to communicate with Dell employees through blogging and the dell to dell website. They created this consumer based website after the "Dell Hell" episode. Like our class speakers from Dell informed us, they listen to the consumer and change the company's policies and technologies to best meet market standards.

iKlax player is an interactive audio player that allows listeners to download music and manipulate the tracks. The tracks have a limited amount of manipulation as stipulated by the given artist. iKlax player is available for PCs and is being made for Mac. The software makes it possible for artist and listener to interact. The artist creates the track with the intention of the listener to manipulate it, but the restrictions on the track respect the artist's creativity and only certain amounts of manipulation can occur on the track. Within two weeks of the software becoming available, 10,000 downloads took place. iKlax media is proud to announce that over 500 artists have downloaded the software.

Las Vegas!

The Nokia Internet Cafe in the Sky is in Las Vegas, and Nokia held the first ever press briefing 180 feet in the sky overlooking Las Vegas. They had a crane lift a platform full of reporters 180 feet in the air at the Las Vegas CTIA Wireless Show. While up in the sky, the reporters were given the opportunity to test out the new N810 Internet Tablet. It is similar to an IPhone and offers long range wireless internet called WiMAX. The technology makes it possible for the consumer to access the Internet in far off, unexpected places including the Nokia Internet Cafe in the Sky.

Digital Living Experts

Connections, which is a conference for market developments and growth concerning digital lifestyles, is holding a conference featuring digital living experts. The conference is being held at the Santa Clara Convention Center. There are more than 70 speakers expected to speak including Vice President of Samsung LCD business, Scott Burnbaum.

The topics being covered during the conference include: social and digital media, mobile applications and content, service providers and new strategies, IPTV and TV 2.0, and home and lifestyle management.

The conference is being produced with Consumer Electronics Association.

MTVN and mobile video streams

Between February 2007 and February 2008, MTV networks announced it streamed around 57 million mobile videos. This is a record breaking number for MTV, and made it the largest provider for mobile videos. The growth of video streams represented a 94% growth when compared to last year's numbers.

This growth was made possible due to interactive TV campaigns, such as The Hills which I blogged about in an earlier post, games, and mobile media. VH1 is launching a mobile game about the show Flavor of Love.

MTV networks consists of MTV, VH1, Nickelodeon, Comedy Central, CMT, Logo, etc.

McCain and Emotion Mining Research

According to Emotion Mining Research, voting for John McCain makes people feel depressed and angry. More specifically among older and Hispanic voters, when thinking of John McCain, they feel more positive and show emotions such as confidence.

Emotion Mining Research asked the question, "How does voting for John McCain as president make you feel?" They polled 70 Republican voters from California before the primary election on February 5th. Tom Snyder commented that there is a subconscious mix of emotions. He feels that the McCain campaign should address this before the election. Voters rely and are influenced by their emotions while voting.

"Subconscious feelings and emotions give us a more reliable picture of
the voter mindset than traditional polling and focus groups," Snyder said.
"If candidates know how voters feel toward them at the deepest levels, they
can make better decisions about how to deliver their messages" (Voting for McCain Stimulates

Find Madeleine Podcast

Above is the link for our podcast about Madeleine McCann. We discussed the social media campaign the parents started. They blogged on their website about the ongoing investigation of their missing daughter.

Madeleine McCann

A family from England was on vacation in Portugal. They were staying in an apartment at a resort. The family was Mr. and Mrs. McCann and three small children. Later in the evenings the parents would go to dinner at a nearby restaurant and the resort and leave their small children alone, asleep, in the apartment. One evening of the the McCann children, Madeleine, was missing from the room when the parents went to check on the kids.

The parents claimed the child had been abducted. There was an immediate investigation and search to find little Madeleine. It was suspected right away that she was abducted and the parents weren't seen as a threat or accomplice. The parents launched a huge campaign to find their little girl which turned into a worldwide campaign. A website was created and the parents blogged about the situation. And yet we have another example and benefit of blogging. www.findmadeleine.com They used this effort in hopes to get a lead on where their daughter might be.

Later on during the investigation, evidence became aware that the parents killed their daughter on accident, by drugging her to sleep, and disposing of the body. It was speculated that the worldwide campaign they started was an effort to cover up what they had done.

I'm not sure if the parents were convicted or not but as soon as I found out more I'll add to this post.

Podcasts

After reading about pod casts and participating in the class lectures about them I agree that pod casts are a highly effective tool for PR. For example, one of our assignments was to listen to one of the SXSW pod casts about Web 2.0. For those that couldn't attend the panel discussion or couldn't afford tickets, there was an easy and accessible outlet for them to listen to the discussion. Pod casts can also be used in a lot of other ways. They can be used for company meetings, announcements, networking, etc.

The company I'll be working for when I graduate, Fire-Pro USA, plans on pod casting information for clients as a live feed to inform them of the status of a wildfire in their area. The company will also produce pod casts as a way for sales personnel to listen to training seminars. Clients can also download the pod casts to learn how to use fire retardant in the event of a wildfire.

I believe that podcasts will really enhance participation for people who choose to have a home office because they can connect directly to the company and listen to meetings among other things.

Rock Of Love

Brett Michaels, musician, has a show on VH1 called Rock of Love. It is a dating reality show where a group of girls compete in challenges to win group or solo dates with him. Ultimately, Brett will choose a girl he falls in love with. It is like other reality dating shows on MTV and other channels on TV. However, he show does have a unique characteristic to make it stand out.

Viewers blog about the live events happening to the girls! Not only are there corporate blogs, CEO blogs, but there are now reality TV show blogs. On Sunday night during the show the blog, titled "Rock of Love Blog Party Episode 6," there were already 330 comments just minutes after the show had ended.

Save Lids to Save Lives

Yoplait yogurt has a campaign called Save Lids to Save Lives.
When the customer buys Yoplait yogurt, they can mail the lids in to donate money for the Susan G. Komen foundation. For every lid mailed in, Yoplait donates ten cents to their goal of raising $1.5 million. They are guaranteed to donate $500,000. Their annual drive took place last year and ended December 31, 2007. On the website it doesn't say if when the next Save Lids to Save Lives campaign will begin in 2008. To raise awareness of the campaign Yoplait ran both TV and Print ads.

This is a wonderful PR tool because they are working with a famous organization, Susan G. Komen Foundation, that's been very successful in raising breast cancer awareness. Eating yogurt is healthy for you, and you can also be a part of a great cause.

Tampons for Africa

Always and Tampax launched a new campaign. When you buy a box of tampons, money is sent to Africa to supply girls with feminine products so they can go to school when they are on their period. A lot of girls have to miss school and fail their courses because they don't have the necessary and cleanly material when on their period. In addition to buying a necessity, the consumer also feels good for contributing to young girls in Africa. It is a good PR move, because when a consumer is in the store deciding which brand of tampons to buy, they will be more likely to choose Always or Tampax because they are contributing to a good cause. Perhaps these two companies will see an increase in sales.

MTV and The Hills

A lot of shows on MTV and other networks use interactive online tools as part of a way to engage their guests. I thought this was a great PR tool, because the publics can interact directly with a show they like to watch. Also, on some of these websites are merchandise for the customer to buy.

A great example of this PR practice is with the show, The Hills. On the website, you can create a virtual character that is friends with the girls from The Hills, it can live "The Hills" life, and go to clubs and events. Also on the website are profiles of the girls, and places to leave comments and have live chats.

Huba Talks

I was so impressed with the discussion/lecture with Jackie Huba, author of Citizen Marketers. She was comfortable with her PowerPoint, Billy Earnest would have been proud, and she allowed us to discuss openly our ideas and examples for PR.

The whole time she was talking, ideas were running through my mind about how to be successful with PR for my dad's new business Fire-Pro USA. After graduating in May I'll be working for him with the marketing and PR components. I talked to my dad the following evening about how important and essential blogging is for a company. Especially in our case because the business is currently running by word of mouth. I also had the idea to set up pod casts for live feeds of fire updates and customer information for the company.

I'm so glad we had the opportunity to meet and talk to her about PR. The book makes so much sense to me and I fully understand citizen marketers. Without the publics and help from citizens PR wouldn't exist.

One Percenters

I thought it was really interesting from the readings about the one percenters who added content to a webpage, for example on Wikipedia. So many people access the website, that I thought more people would be added information. Millions of people look up information and access websites. There are a lot of knowledgeable people that could add content to a webpage, like the hundreds of teachers and professionals that are in America alone. Although, people are so busy that they might not have the time to add any information.

The one percenters seem so happy to add information for others to learn from. This was apparent to me because they don't get paid for adding the content. Also, when asked to be paid they declined. Without the loyal one percenters wikis wouldn't be able to exist.

Wikis as a PR tool

As a PR tool, wikis can be used to enhance a company's image, share information about a company, and allow consumers to be connected to the company. On the other hand, besides enhancing a company image, wikis can be edited and used unethically as a PR tool.

For example, as talked about in class, Wal-Mart can be found on Wikipedia. They used a wiki to as a PR tool, but they changed or edited the information found on the Wikipedia webpage. The Wal-Mart Wikipedia page includes the history, subsidiaries, corporate affairs, advocacy groups, etc. It can be useful but at the same time unethical. For example, a lot of people were upset that Wal-Mart employees were changing the wiki page.
